Fall 2009
I would first like to thank all of the harvester operators -- Dick Dickerson, Ken Osenko, Mike Gossett, and our two new operators, Ed Hammond and Carl Reuter -- for all of their hard work in maintaining and running the harvester. I would also like to thank all of the guys who help put the harvester in the water in the spring and remove it each fall.
There are always concerns expressed on using chemicals in our lake. There is a need for a balance of chemical treatment and mechanical harvesting of weeds. The chemical treatment is generally from shoreline out 50-60 feet in shallow water; chemicals are not effective in deeper water, and they cannot be used a certain distance from our spillways; so the harvester is the only way of controlling weeds in those areas. There were three weed treatments this year. These were not massive treatments of the entire lake, but rather specific targeted areas of high concentrations of invasive weeds.
We are progressing in our dredging project. This summer, we had soil samples taken and analyzed for composition of the sediment to be removed. We hope to get estimates on project costs this winter so we know what funds will be needed to proceed with this project.
A note to fishermen -- If you are fishing from shore near the harvester, please stay off of the equipment FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY. There are sharp knives on the harvester, and steel conveyor chains that are sloped and can be slippery and unsafe for standing on while fishing. Also, there is an eroding area west of the harvester (LSPOA property) that we are attempting to get plant growth to take hold to stop the erosion, but we need everyone to stay off of that area. We will be working on that this fall and next spring.
