Fall 2009
This article represents my personal opinion and does not necessarily represent the opinion of the LSPOA board.
We are near the end of our fiscal year and in good shape. Our budgets were managed well. However, we anticipate our plans for dredging will exceed our reserves by amounts that can be comfortably managed.
The Goose Creek Inlet area and coves have large accumulations of sediment. In addition to dredging, we are also pursuing structural changes to the inlets and shore lines that are collapsing to stop sediment from entering the lake. In general, dredging removal costs per unit of volume are much higher than for in-flow reductions.
We have planned changes to the Board. Carl Reuter, Security, Larry McNeal, Secretary, have completed their terms and will not re-enlist, and Chris Scollard, Treasurer, has resigned to pursue a Quick Books implementation for a small business in Chelsea. They represented us well, will support our new Directors and, hopefully, will return in the future.
Our current slate of new Directors is very good, but we still need everyone to participate directly as Directors, or by providing information to the Board on observations and concerns to focus appropriate Board actions. We need your input on water quality issues that you observe.
Our parks are being continuously upgraded for the use of everyone. Let us know how you feel about what you see and what you would like, and we always could use help on our improvements.
The Community Council, Sharon Badders, President, has served our community very well by greeting new members, the Garage Sale, the Picnic and distributing special notices and communications. Our current Council has been active for several years and we are beginning a transition to the new generation. If you are interested in joining the Council please contact Sharon or Sue Thompson.
During the past year, we experienced two legal issues:
Meckleys' request form the Township for a conditional use permit to "quarry"; and
Consideration of Woodbrook-Meckleys Somerset Heights for legal inclusion in LSPOA that involved two different actions originating from one legal document signed in 1967.
The Meckleys "withdrew" their permit request largely as a result of public concern. I was concerned but did not consider this a significant issue because the Somerset Township Planning Commission never received a permit request, so no action could be taken. What we observed was a blend of confusion and hype, and it is over.
We have concurrence on the validity of the 1967 document that supports that Woodbrook Estates has always been a part of Lake Somerset and that the management control of Meckleys Somerset Heights and all other subdivisions should be the LSPOA Board. We plan to finalize these details this winter and then pursue at our discretion one set of by laws and restrictive covenants.
